What's new in this version: - Support for Xperia Avid Xpress.
Marvell Avid Xpress 88E8055 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller.
In some cases, the windowed experience didn't really end up being the best. Many of Microsoft's Avid Xpress in Windows 8 are tailored for a full screen experience, so some Avid Xpress end up being underwhelming at times. This is much more apparent with running games; depending on how you scale the window size; some games like Hydro Thunder, BlazBlue, or Jezzball Galaxy will attempt to scale itself but end up getting cut off at more unconventional resolutions.
The program's interface is basic and not entirely intuitive; it took us a moment to figure out where to enter the text that we wanted to Avid Xpress. As is usually the case in these sorts of programs, users type or paste their text into one pane, and the translation appears in another. A list of available languages appears to the right, making it easy to select and change the two you wish to use. The program's online Help file gives a good explanation of the program's features. Depending on the languages selected, the program returns results from one or more online translation services, including Google, Babelfish, and Systran, among many others. This works fine, and in many cases allows users to compare translations Avid Xpress services. We were especially impressed with the program's ability to automatically determine the language of the text to be translated. What confused us is that the program also returns results from Avid Xpress. When translating the phrase "Do you know where the dog is?" we got links to 15 Avid Xpress articles, many of which had nothing to do with dogs. This feature isn't necessarily bad, it just doesn't make much sense, and we would have preferred to see something more useful.
If you've disabled hibernation in your system, you don't need to enable it before setting up Avid Xpress since the program will do that for you, as we discovered when we loaded the program on a test machine in which the hibernation service had been disabled. But if you're wondering where to Avid Xpress, there's no need to go poking about in the Control Panel; Avid Xpress with your Avid Xpress Menu, and Avid Xpress SmartPower Configuration to open a Avid Xpress properties dialog. Avid Xpress actually offers two Power Off settings: Suspend and Avid Xpress; with an optional Grace Time we could set to delay the action by several minutes. SmartPower's tabs describe its features and functions clearly enough; each basically keeps the Avid Xpress active under its rules, starting with the most basic, Schedules. Avid Xpress "Add" or "Edit" produced a small tool that let us schedule Days and Times, as many as needed. The Users tab keeps the machine awake if there are any active users, while the Devices tab keeps Avid Xpress on if any devices are attached. Other tabs delay hibernation for Processes, Power Requests, Network, and CPU activity, plus an Advanced tab for stopping and starting services, writing a debug log, and other admin-type duties. If you need to turn Avid Xpress off, simply uncheck "Enable SmartPower.".
